- What is the Panel on the Future of the Trent-Severn Waterway?
The Panel on the Future of the Trent-Severn Waterway will be an independent panel
appointed by the Minister of the Environment to consult with the public,
key stakeholders and other governments on the future mandate and expectations for the Waterway.
In addition to considering a modern Vision for the Waterway,
the Panel will be asked to develop recommendations on how the TSW can become a premier recreational asset;
a world class destination for recreational boaters; a greater source of clean, renewable energy;
a facilitator of economic opportunity; and, a model of environmental sustainability.
- Why is this review being done?
This review is being conducted to ensure that future operation of the Trent-Severn Waterway meets
the needs and expectations of Canadians.
When most people think of the Waterway, they think of boats. It is also a National Historic Site.
It provides outdoor recreational opportunities for millions of residents and visitors each year.
It is an important part of the economies of more than 50 communities and First Nations.
It protects wetlands and species at risk, supplies drinking water to hundreds of thousands of homes and
supports 18 hydro electric plants which generate clean, renewable energy.
The potential of the Waterway to contribute to the lives of Canadians was recognized by
Parliament with the unanimous passage of a Private Member’s Motion calling for an evaluation
of the future of the waterway. The review is the Government’s response to that Motion.
- How will it be done?
The panel will hold a number of public meetings at various locations along the waterway
throughout the summer and early fall. The panel members will consider the input from the
meetings as well as the results of a number of studies. Recommendations will be submitted
to the federal Minister of the Environment in December 2007.
- How can I find out when and where the public meetings are?
Meeting dates and locations will be posted on the website at www.tswpanel.ca as soon as they are established.
- How can I get involved?
Information on how to get involved will be posted on the Website in a consultation guide.
Those interested will be invited to make submissions to the Panel in person at a series of
public meetings to be held along the waterway. Written submissions will also be accepted.
Anyone wishing to make a public presentation will be asked to schedule a time at one of
the public sessions, and submit a summary of their presentation to the panel in advance.
To assist in the preparation of submissions, discussion papers are being developed on
key topics of interest to the panel. These discussion papers will be posted on the website
as soon as they are available. The Consultation Guide will also provide suggested questions
that might be addressed in submissions.

- What relationship does the Panel have to Parks Canada?
Although Parks Canada is funding the review, it will be regarded as only one of
many stakeholders. Like other interested parties, they will be encouraged to prepare
a submission to the Panel that offers the Parks Canada Agency views on what a
sustainable future for the Trent-Severn Waterway might look like. The panel will
be appointed by the Minister responsible for Parks Canada, and will submit
recommendations directly to the Minister at the end of this process.
- How is the panel review related to the Water Management Study?
The Water Management Study is one of several associated studies that will provide
detailed information to the panel to assist them in formulating recommendations.
This study will review the past, present and future of water management along the waterway.
