Public Consultation GuideBackgroundThe Trent-Severn Waterway is a nationally significant historic, cultural, ecological and recreational waterway. Over the years its economic and social environments have changed dramatically, yet the mandate and associated tools for the waterway’s management have not. A six-member independent panel has been appointed to evaluate the waterway’s future. The panel members will meet with stakeholders and the public about the many complex issues, challenges and opportunities facing the system. How the consultation will workThe consultation will focus on the future mandate and how the waterway will be managed in the future. Public meetings will be held over the next several months in various communities along the waterway. Additional meetings will be scheduled if necessary. Groups or individuals are encouraged to make a short presentation to the panel members at one of the meetings, or can send in a written submission. The deadline on written submissions is September 30th, 2007. The public consultation phase is expected to be completed by the end of September 2007. The panel members will review the public input and the results of a number of supporting studies and will submit recommendations to the minister in December 2007. A number of discussion papers have been prepared on key issues that the panel members are considering, in order to focus public input. These papers are available on the website. Dates and DeadlinesPlease check the website at www.tswpanel.ca for meeting dates and locations. They will be posted as soon as they are set.
